Preparation for an Ultrasound

Each Exam has a separate procedure:

Finish Drinking six 8 oz. glasses of water one hour before the exam time. Do not empty your bladder before the exam. Your bladder needs to be full for optimum results.  It is important to make sure you have consumed all of the water necessary so as not to delay the procedure.

Note: If your exam is for transvaginal only you do not have to drink the water and your bladder may be empty.

Nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before the exam. Abdominal sonograms are done in the morning before noon. Medications may be taken with sips of water.
